“Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” lead in Top Ten Grossing Films of 2023

In a surprising turn of events, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” emerged as the reigning champion of the 2023 box office, surpassing the $1.4 billion mark since its July release. This achievement marks a departure from the dominance of sequels in recent years, with half of the top 10 highest-grossing films being part of ongoing series. Notably, “The Little Mermaid,” securing the seventh spot, is a remake.

Securing the second position is “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” another standalone property, establishing a trend toward originality. Christopher Nolan’s historical drama, “Oppenheimer,” secured the third spot with an impressive $951 million haul.

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, attributes this shift to audience preferences for films that offer a unique and fresh perspective. Despite Tom Cruise’s notable presence in the 2022 charts with “Top Gun: Maverick,” his latest “Mission Impossible” sequel earned a spot in the top 10.

Marvel Studios, known for its box office dominance with franchises like “Spider-Man” and “Avengers,” maintained a significant presence in the top 10 with two films.

The list of the highest-grossing films of 2023, according to Comscore data as of December 18, unfolds with the following rankings:

10. ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ ($476.3 million, released on February 17, 2023)
