Artificial intelligence (AI) has immense potential but also requires careful control to prevent its weaponization, according to Microsoft’s President and Vice-Chairman, Brad Smith. He emphasized the necessity for human oversight and regulation to ensure AI remains a tool under human direction. Smith’s concerns echo those expressed by tech leaders worldwide, who’ve cautioned against the risks of AI’s unchecked growth. ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot, brought attention to these concerns due to its ability to generate human-like responses.

Smith stressed the need for laws and regulations similar to safety measures in other technologies. He highlighted that AI, like electricity, requires mechanisms such as circuit breakers to ensure human control and intervention. The objective is not to stifle AI’s potential but to establish safeguards against unintended consequences.

AI’s impact on jobs has sparked concerns about displacement. Goldman Sachs indicated that generative AI could influence up to 300 million jobs globally, replacing a substantial portion of tasks. However, Smith countered that AI should be seen as a supplement to human work rather than a complete replacement. He likened AI to a “co-pilot,” aiding in smarter and more efficient decision-making but still requiring human judgment.

IBM’s CEO, Arvind Krishna, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing AI’s potential to augment human labor and boost productivity. He emphasized that AI, far from displacing jobs, could contribute to increased GDP.
