China recently stated that it is in favor of all efforts to ensure fair vaccination access. Accordingly, it has extended its support to India’s and South Africa’s proposal to temporarily waive Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) for coronavirus vaccines.
As per sources, China fully understands the current situation and supports the demands of the developing world of waiving an intellectual property rights.
This will be in line with China’s idea that Covid-19 vaccines are for the global public and part of China’s goal of building a global community of health for everyone.
Recently, the US trade representative Katherine Tai communicated with World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus regarding increasing vaccine production and TRIPS waiver on Covid-19 vaccines.
With the successful implementation of the TRIPS waiver, global vaccination production can be increased. This can help in vaccinating the poorest of poor and save lives.
India, South Africa, and 57 members of WTO proposed a waiver in certain provisions of the TRIPS agreement in October last year. This was in line with prevention, containment, and treatment of coronavirus.
