Amazon Launches a Fully Autonomous Warehouse Robot

Amazon recently launched its first fully autonomous warehouse robot, Proteus. The launch demonstrates the company’s intention to develop futuristic hardware with a focus on robots.

Proteus relies on Amazon’s technologies to move around with accuracy and safety. The company claims that the robot can function on its own, without any human assistance. Proteus has a built-in green light that acts as a sensor for the robot to detect the presence of humans and other objects in its proximity. If humans come close to it, the robot waits for them to move away and then resumes its movements.

Amazon will be using Proteus at the outbound GoCart handling areas in its fulfillment centers and sort centers. The company is aiming to use Proteus to help handle the heavier objects, to reduce strain, and the need to employ more manpower for such tasks at its centers.
